Top 25 Best Romance Series Books

The Best Must Read Romance Series

There’s something wonderful about finishing a great book and knowing there’s another one right behind it that will let you keep right on reading about a favorite family and/or character.

Therefore, this Top 25 list will focus on the best romance series. They are all over the map in terms of genre: some are paranormal, many are contemporary, some are historical, etc., but chances are good that no matter what you are “into” when it comes to romance, you will find something (or “somethings”) to enjoy on this list. Some of the novels continue the story of the main characters we have come to love, and some of the novels introduce us more fully to the lives of peripheral characters. I have to admit, I like both approaches! It’s definitely what keeps me reading series romance – I am guaranteed to catch up with some favorite characters, and get to know new characters a little better!

Happy reading!

This series is made up of two novels and a novella: Beautiful Disaster (2011), Walking Disaster (2013) and A Beautiful Wedding: A Novella (2013). If you are into it, you can also add on the Maddox brothers books Beautiful Oblivion (2014), Beautiful Redemption (2015), Beautiful Sacrifice (2015), Beautiful Burn (2016), as well as Something Beautiful: A Novella (2015) and A Beautiful Funeral: A Novel (2016).

NOTE: This series should be read in order.

Why It's On the List Appearing on the New York Times Bestseller List starting in 2011, this series introduced the world to Abby and Travis, and their intriguing relationship. The follow up series introduces us to Traviss brothers one by one. With over 400,000 ratings, and close to 24,000 reviews, the first book in the series, Beautiful Disaster is one of the most read romance novels of all time.

This series tells the story of Abby, a nice girl from Kansas, who ends up having a past no one expected. It also tells the story of Travis, damaged, angry, even abusive but he finds his peace with Abby. Beautiful Disaster is told from Abbys perspective, Walking Disaster is told from Traviss perspective and Walking Disaster has a wonderful epilogue at the end that is bound to get you to start reading the Maddox brothers series.

This series is made up of 15 completed novels, and a 16th is on the way. Starting with Dark Lover (2005), this is one of the hottest paranormal romance series ever published. Each book is self-contained, with the characters from the other novels being peripheral, not central. Each book has a satisfying ending; okay, perhaps satisfying is a bit of an understatementthese books are hot, and the heroes even hotter.

The other books in the series are: Lover Eternal (2006), Lover Awakened (2006), Lover Revealed (2007), Lover Unbound (2007), Lover Enshrined, (2008), Father Mine (2008), Lover Avenger (2009), Lover Mine (2010), Lover Unleashed (2011), Lover Reborn (2012), Lover At Last (2013), The King (2014), The Shadows (2015), The Beast (2016) and The Chosen (coming 2017).

NOTE: This series should be read in order.

Why It's On the List The first novel of this series was a New York Times #1 bestseller and introduces us to the Black Dagger Brotherhood, a group of vampires engaged in a war with their slayers. The series starts by introducing us to Wrath, a ruthless killer set on revenge, who ends up becoming a caretaker for his best friends daughter as he introduces her to his world. The novels which follow introduce us to Wraths brothers, and their stories are just as engaging as his. Although, like any true love, you never forget your first.

This series is made up of four novels; the first three of them tell the story of Anastasia and Christian, and the fourth one tells the story of the first book from Christians perspective (a relatively common trend in series romance since everyone always wants to get inside the head of the hero).

The books in this series are Fifty Shades of Grey (2011), Fifty Shades Darker (2012), Fifty Shades Freed (2012) and Grey (2015).

NOTE: This series should be read in order, although the fourth book could also be read second.

Why It's On the List Topping international best-seller lists, these novels kind of broke the bank in terms of popularity. The first three books sold over 125 million copies, making it one of the most successful series in history (for comparison, the Twilight books sold only 100 million copies worldwide, and there were four novels in that series). Additionally, the fourth book Grey sold over a million copies in four days. In fact, the British Telegraph called Fifty Shades of Grey the best-selling book in the history of Great Britain, even surpassing the individual Harry Potter books.

These novels will play with your head its long been thought that S&M belongs behind closed doors, and that erotica has no place in the front of the bookstore. But Fifty Shades of Grey changed all of that, and erotica became mainstream. Things that good girls didnt dare do, or even think about, became acceptable, even embraceable. Even the last names of the characters, Steele and Grey, were suggestive and had readers literally begging for more.

This series is made up of five novels: Hardwired (2013), Hardpressed (2013), Hardline (2014), Hard Limit (2014) and Hard Love (2015).

Starting off as a self-published series, the Hacker series has gained ground as Wild continued to develop the stories. In fact, the fourth novel in the series, Hard Limit, actually hit #1 on the New York Times and Wall Street Journal best-sellers lists, which is pretty unusual for someone who started as a self-published author.

NOTE: This series should be read in order.

Why It's On the List These novels are all well reviewed, with all of them getting ratings of 4.09 or above on goodreads.com.

This is a fun series to read since they are all about two engaging characters Erica, who is trying to start an internet business, and Blake, who is a hacker and potential investor for Ericas project. As with most relationships that try to mix business with pleasure, there are some challenges along the way, including someone who is trying to murder them! I really like how these two characters have a balanced relationship, each with strengths and flaws, which are fleshed out beautifully by Wild.

This series is made up of ten novels: Lavender Morning (2009), Days of Gold (2009), Scarlet Nights (2009), Promises (2009), Scent of Jasmine (2010), Heartwishes (2011), Moonlight in the Morning (2011), Stranger in the Moonlight (2012), Moonlight Masquerade (2013) and Change of Heart (2014).

NOTE: This series should probably be read in order since while each novel is self-contained, each one also builds a little more on the stories which came before.

Why It's On the List Jude Deveraux is ridiculously prolific, and she has done a masterful job of creating a community that dates back to the mid-1700s. Named after the true love of the founder of the small Virginia town, Edilean is a sweet little town where everyone knows everything about everyone else. A lot of characters come from outside the town and end up finding a place to call home. There are some novels which feature mysteries to be solved, and some novels which feature long lost love, and some novels which are historical. Basically, something for everyone in this series! Plus Deverauxs writing is outstanding, so you really feel like you come to know the residents of this town. (Sadly, it isnt a real town. I looked it up!)

This series is made up of 21 novels and a novella: The numbering is confusing since she didnt write the books in the order she wants you to read them in; this order follows the order in which she would like you to read them: Black Lyon (1980), The Maiden (1988), Judith (1981), Highland Velvet (1982), Velvet Song (1983), Velvet Angel (1983), The Heiress (1995), The Raider (1987), Mountain Laurel (1990), Eternity (1992), The Duchess (1991), The Temptress (1986), Wishes (1989), The Awakening (1988), The Invitation (1994), The Princess (1987), Knight in Shining Armor (1989), High Tide (1999), Forever (2002), Forever and Always (2003), Always (2004) and Someone to Love (2007).

NOTE: This series should be read in the order above, but if you read it in a different order you will still be able to enjoy the books individually.

Why It's On the List Deveraux is a New York Times international bestselling author, and this series is one of the reasons why. Starting back in the 1700s, Deveraux creates her own dynasty with this family from the early times to the present day. Each novel is self-contained, but draws heavily on the family stories which preceded it, so reading them in order is preferred to truly appreciate these novels.

The Montgomery family is wealthy and powerful, and their stories range from England to the wilds of Colorado. The characters are fascinating, and their relationships to each other and the generations which came before makes for a powerful series involving both male and female heroes and heroines. There is another family Deveraux writes about, the Taggerts, who also encounter the Montgomery family, and those are fun stories, too.

This series is made up of five novels, one novella and one illegally released and therefore uncompleted novel: Twilight (2006), New Moon (2006), Eclipse (2007) and Breaking Dawn (2008) were the primary novels in the series. Then in an interview, Meyer admitted that she wished she hadnt killed off one of her characters: Bree Tanner, a girl who played a minor role in Eclipse. So she wrote a novella The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner in 2009. Then, in a blow to all fans of this series, in 2008 Meyer was in the middle of writing Midnight Sun, which was Twilight told from the perspective of Edward, when it was leaked on the internet. Meyer was devastated by the early release of her unfinished work, decided to officially release the 200+ pages that had been leaked, but stopped writing the novel, so it remains unfinished. I admit that I hope that one day she will return to finish it Finally, to honor the 10th anniversary of Twilight, in 2015 Meyer released Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined which switches the roles for Bella and Edward.

NOTE: This first four books of the series should be read in order. The extras can be read in any order, although I think they make more sense if read after the first four novels.

Why It's On the List The Twilight series has sold over 100 million books worldwide in 37 different languages, and remains synonymous with vampire romance.

This series tells the story of Bella, a slightly awkward girl who moves to Forks, Washington to live with her father, and Edward, a vampire who lives with his family nearby. Attracted to one another right away, this series tells the story of their relationship, blossoming from intrigue, to love, to marriage, to family, to her eventual change, and everything in between. There is always danger lurking sometimes from each other and there are a lot of paranormal elements to these novels that make them suspenseful and fulfilling. Most importantly, you really get to know care about and know these characters beyond Edward and Bella, making the reader much more invested in their journey.

Why It's On the List This series is exactly what series romance is supposed to be FUN! (and HOT!)

The tagline for the series is: The star columnists of Stiletto magazine will do anything for a storyexcept fall in love. These women are as normal as they come and many of us can identify with them. They have ups and downs, both professionally and personally, and there is a welcome sense of humor woven throughout the four novels.

These novels have not won any awards, but boy will they put a smile on your face, whether youre at the beach, on a bus, waiting in line at the grocery storeanywhere. They are quick, easy, FUN reads! You dont have to read them in orderbut after reading one, you will have to read them!

NOTE: This series does not need to be read in order, but ideally it is read after reading the Stiletto series.

Why It's On the List The tagline for this series is Youve seen the ladies of Stiletto risk their hearts for a story. Now its time to meet the men of Oxford. Watch as Manhattans expert in all things women learn that when it comes to the right womanthey dont have a clue.

So, still fun. Still engaging. Still a really enjoyable, quick and easy read. There is not a whole lot of emotional baggage in these books which is not to say that they are not well written they are, and the characters are well developed and quite appealing. But if paranormal, suspenseful, out there romance is your thing, you should definitely look elsewhere. This series will make you smileand, its always fun to see the chase from the heros point of view!

This series is made up of four novels: A Rogue by Any Other Name (2012), One Good Earl Deserves a Lover (2013), No Good Duke Goes Unpunished (2013) and Never Judge a Lady by Her Cover (2014).

NOTE: This series should be read in order.

Why It's On the List A RITA-award winning series, these novels are really engaging. Set in London, they introduce the reader to a whole new world of mystery, intrigue, gambling and murder   where light and dark are not so obvious, and where scandal does not always separate good from bad, or right from wrong. The heroes have literally lost everything, and are rebuilding their lives, reputations and relationships from scratch.

This series tells the story of four aristocrats who become exiled from society and learn to make their own way in the worlds they have left. They live hard, play hard and love hard. The women who come to love them in return are passionate, considerate and forgiving, and sometimes conniving, manipulative and secretive. One thing they all have in common, however, is that they are all incredibly strong in their own way.

This series is made up of three current novels and one pending publication: The Deal (2015), The Mistake (2015), The Score (2016) and The Goal (scheduled for publication in late September, 2016).

NOTE: This series does not need to be read in order; each novel stands alone.

Why It's On the List Appearing on multiple best-seller lists, this series is full of young, hard-bodied, sexy hockey players. Yum!

While each novel stands alone, they all focus on college hockey players who use their hot bodies and eternal stamina to woo and win the girls of their dreams. The Deal focuses on NHL-player wannabe Garrett and his failing GPA. His tutor Hannah becomes the prize in a game of wills. The Mistake focuses on king of campus John who worries about what his future will be after college. Although his first encounter with first year student Grace ended poorly, a chance run-in leaves him determined to find a way to convince her to give him another chance. The Score is about ladies man Dean and confused rebound Allie. She rocks his world and then pulls the plug, using the dreaded friend label but he is going to find a way to make her his, until real life intervenes and its no longer just about the chase, but about the dream. Ahhmore hot hockey players!! This series is made up of five current novels and two pending publication: Alex (2014), Garrett (2015), Zack (2015), Ryker (2015), Hawke (2016), Max (scheduled for publication in December, 2016), and Roman (coming in 2017).

NOTE: This series should be read in order, although each novel is stand-alone.

Why It's On the List Reading all these novels about hockey players is definitely making me rethink the overall appeal of the sport!

A New York Times best-selling series, these novels tell the stories of the players on the Carolina Cold Fury hockey team whose escapades are definitely hot enough to melt the ice! The series starts with the story of Alex, a tough guy who embraces his role as most-hated MVP. Forced into doing community service to rehabilitate his image, he soon finds himself falling for Sutton, a social worker used to dealing with egos like Alexs, although his body is definitely something else altogether! Garrett tells the story of a fun-loving guy, always the life of the party. Hes never really thought long term, until he meets Olivia. What he doesnt know is that although Olivia might be Garretts forever, for her even next week isnt a guarantee. Zach is a player whose star is on the rise until a car accident left him a single father and emotionally devastated. Kate is his new nanny, determined to keep things all business. But, the more Zach sees her with his son, the more the sparks between them heat up. Its only a matter of time Ryker tells the story of the team goalie. His contract almost over, he doesnt have a lot of time to prove his worth, both as a player and a single father to two daughters. He meets his match in Gray, the leagues general manager who is used to separating business and pleasure. Linked with the Wild Seasons series, this series is made up of nine novels and a tenth pending publication: Beautiful Bastard (2013), Beautiful Bitch (2013), Beautiful Stranger (2013), Beautiful Bombshell (2013), Beautiful Player (2013), Beautiful Beginning (2013), Beautiful Beloved (2015), Beautiful Secret (2015), Beautiful Boss (2016) and Beautiful (scheduled for publication in October, 2016).

NOTE: This series should be read in order.

Why It's On the List Christina Lauren is a writing partnership of Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings, and boy are they prolific. They write unbelievably sexy, real, well-rounded, articulate, interesting stories about characters we care about, and even though I am embarrassed to carry these books out in public because of the titles, I am exceedingly happy to curl up on my couch at home and devour them!

The first book in the series was actually first published online as part of a Twilight fan fiction page and was called The Office. Then Hobbs and Billings pulled it down and decided to publish it as a stand-alone novel.

The series starts off with the story of Chloe and Bennett, both of whom have rules about workplace romance, and both of whom keep fantasizing about one another. (And boy, can these two fantasize!!) However, the love-loathe relationship between these two was a bit challenging for me, although it does work out in the end, and the follow up allows even more insight into their perspectives. Then the series moves to focus on Max and Sara, and how they test their limits and stamina in all kinds of interesting places. Then the focus shifts to Will and Hannaand then back again. The men in these novels are friends, which adds a nice dimensionality to the various stories.

Linked with the Beautiful Bastard series through overlapping storylines and characters in Beautiful Secret, this series is made up of five novels: Sweet Filthy Boy (2014), Sweet Filthy Morning After (an audio-novel only; 2014), Dirty Rowdy Thing (2014), Dark Wild Night (2015) and Wicked Sexy Liar (2016).

NOTE: This series should be read in order.

Why It's On the List So, sadly these are also novels with titles that mean that I cannot carry them with me to my doctors office, or to a restaurant, or to work to read during lunch in the park. Perhaps I should use the dustcover from another book. That said, the Christina Lauren writing collaboration has done it again with this series which tells the stories of three best friends and their hot Vegas hook-ups.

This series starts with the story of Mia and Ansel and their decision to extend their one-night fling by traveling together to France. Neither of them has thought much past their physical relationship, but when feelings start to enter the picture, things get very real, very quickly. The second book is an audio book, which cements Ansels role as a sweet, caring, little-bit-nasty guy whom every woman in the world would love to love. The third book introduces Harlow and Finn, who dont really like each other but cant seem to get enough of each other. The next novel tells the story of an almost-but-not-quite hook-up between just friends Oliver and Lola. They both want more, but neither wants to make the first moveuntil finally, someone does. And the final story is about Luke and London, and their hot fling that starts to mean more to him than to her, until Its only one night turns into the desire for many, many more.

This series is made up of four novels: For the Win (2014), For the Game, (2015) For the Rush (2015), For the Save (2015).

NOTE: This first two novels in the series should be read in order.

Why It's On the List This series is inspirational romance at its best. Not preachy, with great character development and sweet relationships which are created long before the characters end up in bed together. The first and second novels focus on baseball player Cooper and bookworm London. Forced together by fate, they come to rely on one another, even as Coopers love of the game threatens to overwhelm the relationship. The third book focuses on football player Holden and musician Chloe. Brought together without any expectations, can their relationship survive when the real world reenters the picture? The final novel tells the story of football player Sawyer and bad girl Addison whom have both suffered incredible loss. Bonding through their shared experiences in group counseling, they begin to trust one another when something else happens to threaten their fragile connection. Their journey back to one another is heartwarming.

This series is made up of five novels, but it should have been four. Its probably best to read these in the published order, rather than the alternate point of view books which are books two and five. So, my recommended order is: Thoughtless (2009), Effortless (2011), Reckless (2013), THEN Thoughtful (2015) and, if you must, Untamed (2015). However, you could also read Thoughtful after Thoughtless if you wanted his perspective right after hers. Both of the last two books are alternate points of view for the earlier books, and while Thoughtful is worth the time, Untamed was a real struggle.

Why It's On the List Its interesting that some of the reviews say If you liked Beautiful Disaster youll like this series. I dont think the two have anything in common AT ALL. That said, this is a really compelling storyline for four of the five books as we encounter Kiera, her reliable and loving boyfriend of two years Denny, and hot local rocker (and Dennys best friend) Kellan. A love triangle is born.

I actually really like how these novels develop the stories of these characters you can feel the pain of the decisions that are made; in other words, Keira and Kellan dont just jump into bed lightly. Then as their story continues in the other books, the reality of stardom, and super stardom, and the impact of their everyday choices really create a compelling story. And, of course it doesnt hurt that the stories are heavy on the romance!

This is the series of four books (plus four additional extras that focus on pre-situations and post-situations from the other novels) that became the basis for the hit television show. The novels should be read in order: The Awakening (1991), The Struggle (1991), The Fury (1991) and Dark Reunion. Later, Smith wrote Matt and Elena: First Date (2010) and Matt and Elena Tenth Date on Wickery Pond (2010) which are intended as prequels to The Awakening. She then wrote After Hours (2011), intended to be read between The Awakening and The Struggle. And finally she wrote Blood Will Tell (2012) as a what if response to Dark Reunion.

Why It's On the List It couldnt NOT be on the list, given the incredible popularity of the television series.

The first novel tells the story of a beautiful and popular girl, Elena, and her friends in a small town in Virginia. She seemingly has it all, but shes bored. After spending a summer in France, she breaks up with her cool, popular football-playing boyfriend in search of something more. And she finds it, in the person of Stefan. Stefan, however, wants nothing to do with her. How can this be, she wonders? Doesnt he know Im beautiful and popular? Of course he does, but hes a vampire who is centuries oldand not good for her. That said, of course they fall deeply in love and then his evil brother, Damon, shows up. Damon, who always takes everything good away from Stefan, sets his sights on Elena. Now Elena is attracted to him, tooand there is a mystery to solve when people start turning up dead and there is an unexplained Power around.

The next two novels continue to focus on the love triangle between Elena and the two brothers, and the incredible damage done as a result of their jealousy and possessiveness. The fourth novel brings the three together, as they battle together to save their existence.

Why It's On the List Appearing on the New York Times best-seller list and winning a Choice Award for best romance, this series introduces us to two complex characters, Layken and Will. Layken is 18, and forced to relocate with her mother and brother after the death of her father. She projects strength, but inside she is crumbling. 21-year old Will has his own inner demons, and he works them out by performing slam poetry.

Why It's On the List Winner of the Crowned Heart Award for Excellence, each of the books in this series is a stand-alone mystery-romance novel, with each book focusing on a different Greek island. The first novel is a mystery-romance set on the island of Corfu. The second novel is set on the island of Mykonos. The third novel is, not surprisingly, set on the island of Santorini. The fourth novel is set on the island of Kefalonia. The fifth novel is set on the island of Skopelos, and finals, the sixth novel will be set on the island of Skiathos.

One thing I really like about this series is that all of the novels feature strong, confident, competent female characters. They are not just waiting around for help, but they take responsibility and risks, and they dont mind making the first move! They all have real jobs and real responsibilities, and dont mind mixing it up with the bad guys.

Why It's On the List This series is an international best-seller, and has been nominated for numerous awards.

This series tells the story of Eva and Gideon, and is a story of obsession, romance and intense passion and lust. It tells the story of the coming together of two broken individuals who literally need one another to become whole. It is not always comfortable reading, and, like Fifty Shades of Grey, it definitely pushes some boundaries, but these books are also addictive and difficult to put down once you start reading. To be clear, co-dependency can be challenging to write about, but Day does so in a thoughtful and compelling way, highlighting both the strengths and weaknesses of their mutual need.

Shocked to discover there are good vampires (she has some serious daddy issues which have affected her perspective), she starts to train with Bones, and eventually they end up in bed. The sex scenes in this series are incredibly hot!!!!! Over the course of the series, Cat and Bones are together, then apart, then together, then forced apart, then together, thenwell, you get the point. However, each novel is really engaging and easy to read. Frost creates a really believable and enjoyable otherworld and characters, both main and supporting, that are really fun to follow along with as each novel unfolds.

This series is made up of two published novels and there is supposedly a third novel scheduled to be released in 2017, but there is nothing on the authors website about it. The published novels are: The Edge of Never (2012) and The Edge of Always (2013).

NOTE: This series should be read in order.

Why It's On the List Appearing on the New York Times, USA Today and Wall Street Journal best-seller lists, this is a compelling story about self-discovery, trust and love, taking advantage of all that life has to offer and making the most of opportunities. The heroine is Camryn (Cam) who wants something new and different and sets out with her toothbrush and very little else on a grand adventure. Along the way she meets Andrew, and together they explore the world and each other. The second novel finds them doing what they wanted to do until tragedy occurs and threatens to tear them apart. Andrew decides they should go back to where they met, on another cross-country road trip.

This series is made up of three novels so far, and I have to admit there is something a little uncouth about reading them since we know such relationships are taboo. Based on stepbrother romance, with men who are hot and rich and powerful, the heroines in these novels know its wrong, but boy do they make it right. Even the cover art on the books are hot!!! The word that keeps coming to mind about these books is sexy

The books in this series are Rebel (2015), Bossy (2015) and Mine (2016).

NOTE: This series does not need to be read in order, and the stories are unrelated to one another.

Why It's On the List These novels are about women who know what they want and go for it. Sometimes they are a victim of circumstance, but they are certainly not shy! Each novel features a different woman with a different relationship to her stepbrother one woman is looking for revenge, one woman is looking for passion and the other woman ends up in a marriage of convenience that just happens to be to her stepbrother. They are all fun characters, and the sex scenes are definitely steamy!

This series currently has 32 different novels in it. They are divided into three different groupings: Derek and Sofias story is told in books 1-7; Rose and Calebs story is in books 8-16; a new hero, Benjamin/Ben, is introduced in books 17-24; the Clan of Novaks is the focus in books 25-32. And according to her website there is another series, Season 5 coming out starting with the September 14, 2016 release of A Dawn of Guardians.

Its pretty amazing how many of these novels there are here considering the first one, A Shade of Vampire was not published until 2012. That said, there are a lot of haters out there who strongly dislike these novels, but Forrests novels are consistently among the top 100 on the kindle e-book author chart and she has a lot of fans who continue to buy her books including her first one which is pretty old at this point (published in 2012).

Why It's On the List Forrests novels create an intense, dark story which is placed in a unique setting. It develops the relatively numerous characters pretty quickly, but we still feel like we know them well. The use of personal narrative also helps to draw us into both perspectives for example both Sofia and Derek tell their stories in first person and this is a consistent approach that she uses in each of the novels in the series.
